I think for most it will be fairly clear what my household will be consumed with: The Avengers! It’s about freaking time right? We’ve been waiting for this and I can’t wait!

On top of that, I will be on the prowl for some awesome new swanky gamer clothes. Not just any gamer clothes but…dare I say it…maternity clothes! That’s right my gamer buds, I have a future gamer in the making going on under the tum tum. A bun in the oven, knocked up, with child, eating for two, a mini me in the making! We’ve got many more months to go but I can tell you we’re already picking out the perfect controller for our little miniature gamer and my husband is on the prowl for a “dragon bjorn” aka baby bjorn. This should prove to be quite the adventure.

Gaming activities this weekend I’m sure will include some World of Warcraft and possibly some co-op Borderlands with the man. What are you playing?

I remember when Skyrim came out my husband and I would talk about how great it would be if it was multiplayer so that we could explore the world together. Oh such a romantic but unattainable thought isn’t it? Not anymore kiddies!

Game Informer released news today that a new MMO, The Elder Scrolls Online is finally going to be officially unveiled in their June issue. This game has been in development by Zenimax Online Studios for several years now and I for one cannot wait to see what they have come up with.

Game Informer’s news releases promises a June issue filled with lots of teasers such as solo questing, dungeons and even PVP conflicts that will put the three player factions against each other in open world warfare. You should also be sure to check out the Elder Scrolls Online hub, over the course of the next few weeks to see new exclusive content.

“We have been working hard to create an online world in which players will be able to experience the epic Elder Scrolls universe with their friends, something fans have long said they wanted,” said the game’s director Matt Firor in a statement. “It will be extremely rewarding finally to unveil what we have been developing the last several years. The entire team is committed to creating the best MMO ever made – and one that is worthy of The Elder Scrolls franchise.”

As for me, I can’t wait to get my hands on this issue!

Tera online has been much anticipated in the gaming community for quite some time. I’ve watched the trailers and I have to admit at first, I was really looking forward to trying it out. The environments look amazing; the combat looks fun, and even the crafting skills, mining and gathering, look like a step above other MMO’s. When I saw the trailer for it last year, I was excited to try something new.

And then…rumors started flying. The first rumor I heard was that Tera wasn’t going to launch due to a lawsuit filed by NCsoft. Then it was that it would launch, but would be a late launch. Then I heard it might launch but could possibly be pulled after launch and everyone would be out the money they paid. All of these reasons annoyed me to no end. At first, I thought it’s probably just some silly lawsuit that a big company like NCsoft is doing to bully a smaller startup company. But then, I started reading. I started learning exactly what this lawsuit is about and exactly just how shady the guys at Bluehole are.

First thing, I recommend to anyone interested in this is to go hop over to this document. I’m just one person spouting off out of frustration and being pissed off at this whole situation and just sharing my opinions but you can form your own opinions by reading that document as it is the official lawsuit filed by NCsoft against Bluehole. Read the WHOLE thing. Don’t skim or you’ll miss some interesting tidbits. Of course, we don’t know what’s happening between lawyers, what is truth or what will happen in the end but let me just give my opinion based on this complaint.

I’m not going to go over every detail with you, I think we are all adults and can read for ourselves, but this is what was most important to me. This is paragraph 5 of the lawsuit filed by NCsoft:

“5. In 2009, the former NCsoft employees were convicted by a Korean criminal court for the theft of valuable trade secrets from NCSoft. Those convictions were upheld in significant part by the intermediate appellate court. In 2010, a Korean civil court held these individuals, along with Bluehole, liable for misappropriation of trade secrets, awarded NCsoft damages, and issued an injunction preventing the former NCsoft employees and Bluehole from utilizing NCsoft’s propriety information on a going-forward basis. The injunction was affirmed by the intermediate appellate court, although the award of damages was reversed. The criminal convictions and civil judgement are now pending on appeal before Korea’s highest court.”

I’m not an attorney and I don’t follow lawsuits closely, but this one paragraph tells me that they obviously were up to no good. Even if it’s not quite as bad as NCsoft makes it out to be (and we don’t know that it isn’t) the courts agreed with them and convicted! No, not in the US, but convicted none the less! And now of course they are trying to use loopholes and appeals to keep from serving jail time or from paying fines. But don’t stop there, keep reading and look over all of the allegations and take a few long looks at the concept art for characters and even the damn logo!

Guys we aren’t just talking about ideas. Hell, most of the MMO’s out there today use the same ideas. Everyone has a similar combat system, similar skills, and similar questing mechanics. We are talking about former employees leaving a company and forming their own company and allegedly using trade secrets of their former employee to make that company grow. This isn’t just competition this is about the revealing of trade secrets, using NCsoft’s own artwork, copyright infringement and going against a non-compete agreement. I work in the software industry and I can tell you as small as my company is I had to sign a non-compete and I also had to sign an agreement pertaining to intellectual property. Now, non-competes when it comes to jobs, typically don’t stand up in court. People have to make a living right? But non-competes for business to business, definitely do and are brought up in court all the time. And they didn’t just go work for someone else, they started their own business!

And just how underhanded did all of this go? The complaint in the link above lists everything but a few things that stuck out to me: The people who left NCsoft to form Bluehole not only allegedly stole copyright information but according to NCsoft’s complaint also used confidential payroll and other personal information of NCsoft employees to draft compensation packages that were higher than what they got in NCSoft (which they also signed an agreement saying they would never do that). They also used NCsoft’s own conference rooms to hatch this little plan of theirs out. That’s like cheating on your husband while he’s in the same room as you! Totally jacked up in my opinion! And according to the complaint, all of this was confirmed by review of computers that were impounded from Bluehole and police interrogations of former employees. Park and three others were convicted and either fined or sentenced to prison terms in Korea. Of course, these are also on review by Korea’s highest court. Did I mention loopholes already?

So how were they able to release Tera in Korea? Why did the courts not rule on whether they had incorporated stolen secrets into an actual video game? Yet another loophole my friends! Bluehole had not yet released Tera at the time the judgement was made so no actual accusations could be made and the courts could not consider it without actual infringement. This is the only reason why Tera released in Korea in 2011.This is why I worry about it releasing in the US. If they can’t make judgment until after a game releases, does this open the possibility of the game being yanked after it releases and NCsoft can prove that it is infringement? And if it does, is anyone who buys out their money? Most likely a move like this would bankrupt Bluehole so my guess is no money would be returned to consumers.

So where is this rant going? We don’t know yet what the outcome will be in the court case in the United States but considering that they were already found guilty in Korea, that’s enough proof for me. I don’t care how much I like a game, how much I want to play a game, I do have some moral standards. I know everyone loves to hate on the big companies because of their success and thinks they are monsters, but I’m sorry, in this case, the little guy did it wrong. The little guy is the monster in this story.

As gamers, our main goal is to play wonderful video games. We want to enjoy games and talk about how awesome they are to our other gamer friends. But how do we support and spread news of a game that is being developed by a company that has used such a blatant display of shady practices? Even if they aren’t found guilty in the U.S. there are some obvious signs that something is not right here.

Should we just ignore what’s happening because it’s a great game and we really want to play? I’m not going to tell anyone what to do and I won’t judge anyone for the choices they make, but sadly, I just can’t. I will miss playing Tera with all of you.

I’ve never played a game that seemed to actually try to get me to dislike it so much…until now. The newly released Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City was something I was actually looking forward to but unfortunately, wish they had never released. Well, let me take that back, I wish they would have spent more time on it before they released it and fixed or changed some of the things they did with it.

Firstly, I do apologize to those gamers who might be new to Resident Evil games because most likely you were lost at the start of the game since the developers decided to give you no backstory on the history of what has happened. I can appreciate the fact that maybe they were catering to the Resident Evil fans, but you can’t leave out new customers completely or you’ve ruined it for them. The basic story line is that Raccoon City is overtaken with zombies. Umbrella, who as you know is behind this disaster, wants to clean it up. It’s your job, as a member of the Umbrella Security Service team, to retrieve virus samples and destroy all evidence of Umbrella’s involvement. This was actually something I found rather cool about playing Resident Evil. I don’t always want to play a good girl and this is my chance to be on the wrong side. In theory this should have made for an awesome story line, unfortunately, the badassery of this game was held back by poor some bad implementation from the developers.

The gameplay is fairly basic but is also very frustrating. In single player campaign mode you rely on an AI squad to help you out with each of your missions, but the reality of it is that you are toting around what appear to be the bottom of the barrel squad members who barely made it through any sort of military training school and are distracted by bright shiny objects that cause them to have absolutely no sense of tactics. The AI members, to put it bluntly, suck. There is no way to control them yourself and they have no rhyme or reason as to what they do on their own. You will quickly find it very annoying when you are constantly reviving them. The AI is definitely the worst aspect of this game and made it completely useless to even have them around. This just is not a game strong in single player campaign mode.

There is a co-op mode so that you can group up with friends or random players and it does help out and actually makes the game fun. In fact, the multiplayer aspects of Raccoon City are where this game excels the most. If you’re feeling adventurous you can hit the multiplayer mode with a four-on-four match to play a little capture the flag (virus).

The cover system, something that typically is a vital aspect of any third person shooter, seemed horribly “off” to put it mildly. It’s an automatic “stick” when you walk up to something to cover behind, which means that you may stick to something when you didn’t mean to and you may fail to stick when you did. And don’t even think of bouncing over that cover when you’re ready. No cover bounding here! However, as another perspective, in asking my gamer husband what he thought about it, he said he really enjoyed the cover system and it works great. I guess to each his own right?

The aiming and firing is not even a skill you can really develop. It’s so random how it operates and is very floaty on the screen. However, OMG you can move while you’re firing! Unfortunately that doesn’t help the issue all that much. But never fear because your melee attack is so overpowered that you can turn this shooter into a hack and slash! (Can you hear the sarcasm in that?)

How do the environments fair in the game? Well, if you’ve played previous Resident Evil games you have probably come to know they typically have some pretty scary designs and very tense atmospheres, but I don’t think you can say that Raccoon City meets those same criteria. I won’t say the graphics are bad, because they really aren’t, but the design is rather dull. They don’t give off that scary feeling that you should get while playing a Resident Evil game.

While the environments of Raccoon City may be lacking, the character development and “story line” is completely missing in action. Yes, you get to play on the bad side this time around, but what makes you so bad? Simply working for Umbrella? You’re just a random squad member with a few catch phrases (and yes you can even play as a girl). There is no in-depth story of your character and no reason for you to care about your character or even understand him or her. You’re just sort of… there.

I must admit one aspect that I thoroughly enjoyed in the game was the fact that I could get infected by a zombie and actually turn into one myself if I don’t have an antiviral spray on me. In multiplayer, this is even more fun because your own teammates can get infected and start coming at you.

Raccoon City should have been a great game. It is a successful series and I for one, am greatly disappointed with how little attention they gave to it. Is it worth buying? Honestly, if you’re a diehard Resident Evil fan, of course you will want it in your collection. If you’re a fan of games like Left 4 Dead where it’s just a shoot em up type game with not a lot of character development and scenery, then this also might be a good game for you. While I would have liked to have recommended it to other gamer girls with a gamer guy, unfortunately there is no local co-op. It’s really hard for me to tell anyone to go out and buy this game. This is one of those games that maybe you want to rent from Gamefly to try it out for yourself before you buy. But it’s in my library and will be staying there for a rainy day.

Mass Effect 3 finally came out! We will get to that later once I have a proper review ready for it, but have you seen the Xbox 360 Vault from Calibur 11? I will admit…it’s a little clunky looking, but I mean come on…it’s Mass Effect 3. Not to mention it comes with a certificate of authenticity as well as some DLC for the game, so cool! The man and I have been wanting to get a Vault for the xbox for awhile now and this one just seemed to fit the ticket. So for now I am patiently waiting for it to arrive…ok not really.

Here is my bitch of the day!

I ordered my vault weeks ago. Received my receipt, it won’t be shipping until March 6th. Understandable since that’s when the game releases. Ok I can deal with that. Then on the 6th I get an email telling me that my Vault would be shipping that day and I should have it within 3-5 days. So excited! I call the man and tell him we can be expecting it any day. Oh but no! Late Tuesday night I get an email from Chelsea at Calibur telling me that in fact NO my Vault did not ship out! Shipping won’t even begin until March 12th! WTF? Not to mention the email I received was copied to what I am assuming is a large customer list and ALL of our emails were exposed to everyone on the email because it was a CC instead of a BCC. Hello! Have you never heard of blind carbon copy? Do you know nothing about privacy? Thanks for giving my email out to everyone on that list so that I can start receiving tons and tons of spam. So I am a little disappointed that I won’t be getting my Vault this week AND my email will most likely be filling up with junk sometime in the near future. At least the Vault will look cool on my Xbox….I guess.

Update: March 12th, Well folks, I waited all day today for my shiny “your item has shipped notice” but oh no, Monday came and went and no pretty email telling me to get my hopes up that I would receive my lovely vault. Not even an email coping my personal email out for all to spam like last time. I decided to leave poor Chelsea alone and try to go directly to the company to find out what the deal is. The website says to email orders@calibur11.com to inquire about orders, so I did as a good girl should and inquired. So we shall see if I hear back from them regarding my shipment…patiently waiting (fuck no I’m not!)

Update: March 13th, surprise…no contact…no email for shipping…perhaps tomorrow I might get lucky?

Update: March 16th…have they never heard of a woman’s wrath? Seriously, I am quite pissed over this ordeal and if it wasn’t for it being Mass Effect I would have called my credit card company already and canceled the order through them since Calibur11 doesn’t seem to have time to return my emails. I’ve emailed a couple of times now, sent in another one today, in fact, demanding that someone contact me. No delivery and not even an update email telling me it has shipped or a reason why it hasn’t shipped. How in the hell do you take pre-orders and then not deliver?

Update: March 20th…Well, I still haven’t received a response to my emails that I sent in, but did receive a generic mass email they must have sent to everyone today:

Due to unforeseen circumstances, our shipment of Mass Effect 3 Vaults have been delayed by one more week. Calibur11 will be shipping pre-orders as soon as they arrive at our office in Minnesota on Friday (March 23rd) with UPS tracking numbers arriving to you by email.

So shipping on Friday now? Over two weeks late. Ya, I will believe it when I receive my tracking number.

Update: March 23…I actually received a tracking number today. (Can you hear the angels singing?). I will update as soon as I have it in my hot little hands.

Update: March 30th…Received…finally. It’s a pretty awesome Vault, little disappointed some stuff didn’t light up like I thought it would but it’s ok, it’s still on the Xbox and looks really cool! It’s the only thing that has really offset this rather terrible buying experience.

I’ve got some catching up to do on my video game blogging so this morning, let’s get things rolling with a little Star Wars talk! I’m talking about a Star Wars: The Old Republic review! Everyone is trying it out! Are you playing too? Let me know what you think of the game so far.

SWTOR was a welcome break for me. To be honest, I’ve been getting a little burned out on World of Warcraft and until Mists of Pandaria comes out this was a great change up. The problem is, after a few weeks of playing, it’s basically World of Warcraft with a Star Wars theme. Is that a bad thing though? I don’t think so. There is a reason game developers mimic Blizzard’s work of art. It works! Why reinvent the wheel? Don’t get me wrong, there are some differences and even some improvements, but the best part about it is that it was really easy to jump into and start playing right away since I was already so comfortable with Wow.

From the very beginning of the game after you create your character you will start by following the same standard quest objectives that many other MMO’s have, however, the big difference you will see is all of the storytelling that will happen during your questing. SWTOR doesn’t have your quick little click the NPC, read his long wall of text and click accept. Instead each quest you get and turn in is typically followed up with some voice acted interaction between you and the NPC. It can really involve you in the story, but even I have to admit some of it is rather long and the side missions that aren’t part of your main story line can be a little less than interesting. Luckily, you can easily hit the space bar during dialog to skip the acting and just read the last lines to get the important part of the quest information.

The quests themselves are your standard “go kill this guy” or “go get me ten of these”, etc. type of missions. Nothing special to report on that aspect of the game.

The great part about the questing, however, is that you get to respond to many of the NPC’s dialogs and quest objectives. You can make decisions to be pleasant and helpful (light side) or you can choose to threaten people and even murder in some cases (dark side). The choice is completely up to you, but keep in mind that your alignment can affect certain things within the game such as how your companions feel about you.

Speaking of companions, I have really enjoyed the ability to have one at my side during flashpoints and even quest missions. Companions are obtained through certain quest lines and are great additions to your arsenal of whoop ass. Companions have their own set of abilities just like you do and you will gear them out as well, so don’t throw away or sell that gear just because you can’t use it yourself.

The combat is decent and works like most MMO’s with you selecting a target to attack and then mashing buttons to attack it. The major difference I see between SWTOR and other MMO’s however is there is no autoattack. That’s right children, every attack you make is purposeful and done with a manual push of the button that matches the attack you want to use. This has been a sort of love-hate way to play for me. I love the fact that it adds a bit more of a challenge in the combat, but on the flip side, it forces you to fill every single moment with a button push, and MANY of the same basic attack over and over again between your major attack rotation. It can get a little tedious and make you wish that basic attack was just an autoattack.

And how about the whole MMO aspect? Well to be honest, this game could have been a single player RPG and aside from the fun guild chat that I have joined in on, I don’t think I would have miss anything. You can complete many of the objectives like heroic areas with your companions or just choose not to do them with no real consequence. The only other conversation’s I’ve had with anyone outside of my guild has been along the lines of “Are you a real life female?” or “Tits or GTFO”. I don’t get a lot of “MMO” enjoyment from it and paying $15 a month doesn’t seem right when it could have just been a great single player game that stored all my data locally rather than on a server.

What about bugs? Unfortunately, yes they are there. Bugs usually creep out of new games for weeks, if not months, until the developer decides to release a patch to address them. Luckily, most of the ones I found were more or less related to the way the game looks rather than how it plays. For example, I kept running across these area where if your camera angle was shifted you would see this sky high large wall of digital “junk” just kind of floating there. I’ve also found many times that I would cast a ranged spell and even after stopping and moving, the particle effect would continue casting from where I was just standing. There has also been a lot of “stuck” issues even after using the unstuck command.

What’s the biggest complaint I have for this game? I would love for the UI to be more customizable. I’m really hoping that either I just haven’t found it or that eventually they will open it up for Addon’s from Curse perhaps, but right now you can’t even dock your bars where you want. As a gamer, that is a HUGE annoyance to me. I find it hard to believe that people in the beta didn’t bring this up…or were they just ignored? I’d also like to know how I am comparing to others (this is an MMO after all). Why no meter to show DPS ratings to see who is putting in their work?

There are still many aspects of the game I haven’t discussed yet, such as crafting and PVP, but I will definitely get around to it. All in all, I think SWTOR is a great game and will only improve with time. There are lots of areas to explore as you level up and the storyline is very interactive. It’s definitely a game I would recommend any RPG players to try out!

When I first heard that War in the North was coming out, I was pumped! The previews looked so much better than previous Lord of the Rings. This new Lord of The Rings had claims of high difficulty, in-depth storyline that follows alongside the actual line and my favorite part: the couch co-op!

LOTR is your standard run of the mill hack ‘n’ slash with talent trees, leveling up and tons of loot. The combat itself however, is where I had the most fun. I’m not saying it’s a highly advanced system, but what do you expect from a hack ‘n’ slash? Mainly your goal in combat (aside from killing the baddies) is to land critical hits (the big yellow arrow of their head) and severe limbs (and yes this game was rated M).

Depending on which character you choose to play as will determine what your special abilities are as well. Your choices are Eradan, the human ranger, Farin a stout Dwarven warrior and the lovely Andriel, the Elven mage. I went with Andriel of course because I typically choose casters in games I plan to play for a while. Of course, I am always chided with “You can’t try to be a shadow priest in everything you play”, but anyway (yes I can!). Unfortunately, playing solo with these guys as your side kicks or even playing co-op with just one as a side kick, I found to be very useless. My fiancé and I played some couch co-op and most of my time was spent reviving Farin. He was pretty much fodder for us to keep the big mobs busy while we picked them off, but he always had highest death count at the end. After 2 days of playing we lovingly started referring to him as “Fartin”.

While the brutality of flying severed limbs and bloody drippings on the ground was nice, it did get very repetitive…very fast. In fact, by the end of the first major mission, you pretty much have seen everything you’ll get to do as far as combat is concerned. In fact, most of the game is just hack ‘n’ slash then conversation in a town…then rinse and repeat. There really wasn’t a lot of substance in the combat.

I did mention couch co-op didn’t I? This was a lot of fun for us to play together on our Xbox 360. My fiancé played as Eradan and with me as Andriel, we plowed through the first through missions together. I chose to go down the path of the healer so that we could stay alive a bit longer and his damage output was pure awesome. The part we enjoyed the most was at the end of certain mission sections the game would display your competitive stats. It was fun to compare things like number of limbs severed, damage amount taken, most valued item found, number of breakables broken, etc.

The only complaints we had on couch co-op mode that we didn’t see in solo player mode was the glitching of the text on the split screen. If you aren’t sure what I mean let me explain. When you walk to an area that lets you advance to a new area it shows a message like ‘Andriel is waiting for other party members” or “Eradan is in inventory” or other messages. These messages stayed on our screen throughout gameplay, and wouldn’t disappear after the task was finished. They would only be replaced by new text messages when something else would happen.

Overall, War in the North isn’t a bad game, it’s a great way to spend a weekend with your guy curled up on the couch, but it’s not something that I think any hard core gamer would feel is a “must have”. If they left the game play and story as is, but fixed the glitches and other things that are broken, it would be an excellent game to play on the days when your “must have” games haven’t been released yet. Will we play again? Yes! Even though I have complaints it really was a lot of fun.

I browse game trailers daily just to see what’s out there, what’s coming soon or to find older games to play when I’m feeling incredibly nostalgic. Today I was watching some old Devil May Cry videos and then watched the latest trailer for the next installment of DmC. I typically read a few comments just to get an idea of how people feel about the games and I have to say “wow people!” Boooohooooo cry all you want ya sissy’s, it isn’t changing the fact that you won’t be playing as a white haired bad ass in this latest rendition of Devil May Cry. I keep reading about how this is the end for Dante, but seriously people, chill out. As long as the game is good, who cares if he has white hair, blue hair or pink hair with black polka dots, although how cool would that be? I’m not even saying I agree with or am in love with this new design of Dante but really, is bitching about it going to do anything to change it? Probably not! Will you seriously not buy a game that could be fun as hell to play simply because you are holding a grudge because they fucked with the look of your main man? This is a game boys, not a fashion show. Nobody knows for sure how this storyline will go. To me it might look like a prequel to Dante’s younger years, others are convinced this is Dante’s son. The only thing we do know is that Dante’s history has MANY unanswered questions to his past and all I’m saying is before you start FREAKING out and looking for the nearest baby to nom nom nom your frustrations out on, relax and wait for it to be released so that you have the full scoop on what’s actually happening.

Personally, I’ve watched the trailers for it and I for one am really looking forward to kicking some ass in his shoes! By the way, anyone happen to find a more accurate release date than “sometime in 2012″?

What else to do on a boring Wednesday night but to browse the Xbox Marketplace looking for something fun to play. I’ve seen Dungeon Defenders pop up a few times and just sort of brushed it off. I mean come on, how much fun can playing some miniature kid like characters in a combat arena with waves and waves of monsters coming at you be? TONS!

If you aren’t sure what Dungeon Defenders is, just imagine being put into a room with the sole goal of keep the baddies away from the goodie (the eternia crystal). You have your choice when you first start the game to play as a warrior, monk, mage or ranger. Since I play a hunter in WoW, you can imagine which class I chose. My partner in crime on the other hand went mage. Each class has their own special abilities and gain more as your levels increase. My ranger for example was given some traps to explode things with or gas them to death…and who doesn’t like to watch a chick blow shit up? Other classes get barriers, turrets and other gadgets to use at their disposal.

The game sends droves of mobs at you in waves that increase in number and difficulty with each wave and it’s your job to use your special abilities to keep them at bay along with your friends. Notice I said friends. While you can play alone, you really shouldn’t. Some of the arenas can be quite difficult to complete on your own and the room becomes so completely chaotic that it just overwhelms yo. Besides hanging out at the tavern after a battle just isn’t fun alone, now is it?

The local co-op is actually one of the main reasons we picked it up and it definitely does not fail to satisfy in that department. It kept my man and I busy for hours! But if you don’t have someone local to play with or want a full group of 4 you can join random multi-player matches.

Any complaints? Not much really. The only thing I wish it did offer up was some slight changes to the way you look when you wear new gear. No matter what cap you throw on your head or what chest piece you might be wearing, your character never changes the way it looks. Not a big deal I suppose, but I guess I’ve just gotten spoiled with other RPG games like WoW that changes with every gear slot. But eh, nothing major to report! For 1200 Microsoft points we are getting a lot of enjoyment out of it. You can grab it on the Marketplace if you’re online or get it on their site.

So I’ve been on a World of Warcraft break for a few days. Funny how you waste your time away on something and are afraid to leave it, and when you finally do, you find it’s not all that bad out there in the real world. But here is the problem: NO WOW = SO FUCKING BORED.

To combat this battle of boredom, Josh and I headed out to get a fix for our addiction. I’ve come to realize something about my gamer fiancé…he’s a brat. Not just a brat, but a VERY SPOILED brat! As I trailed my eyes along the shelves of Xbox games available at my neighborhood Gamestop, every time I came across something that might fit the bill for the night I just heard a whole lot of “I already have that” piercing my ears. Seriously? What game doesn’t he have? Just hang some sugar cubes around my neck and call me sugar momma! But I digress!

Even through all of this realization, it still doesn’t fix the issue that I couldn’t find a game I really wanted to play. David, my Gamestop know-it-all friend and infamous podcaster from BossBattlePodcast.com, suggested a few things, but then in the end decided I should just go home and play Josh’s copy of Oblivion. Skyrim is coming out soon so this actually sat well with me. It would get me in the mood for upcoming release and give me something to do for the night. I love it when a plan comes together!

Then again, maybe the plan didn’t come together so well. Instead of popping in Oblivion I was somehow talked into playing Mass Effect. Not the latest and greatest version either, just the plain old Mass Effect 1. Are you shocked? Well if not, you should be…or you don’t know me. I RARELY play shooters. I’m teribad at them. The ones I excel in are the ones I can just sort of spray and pray. Things like Left for Dead or Borderlands or anything I am playing multi-player in and can hopefully be carried by someone else who is good at shooters. Mass Effect has been a part of my household for years, however, so I know it well. But I’ve never tried the original Mass Effect on my own. I gotta say, after one night of gameplay, it wasn’t all that bad. And as surprising as it may be, I will be heading back in tonight to unravel more of the story.

I won’t even bother getting into my thoughts on the game play or graphics or anything like that. It’s an old game…and that means old news, but to be honest I was dreading playing the game before I even started it. Why? Because it’s a shooter and that’s the mentality I have for this shit. How fair is that? As I played, I kept asking myself “Why Don’t I play shooters?” and I think I have a list. Oh ya baby, a top 5 list!

I know nothing about weapons. I hear guys who play shooters say they are switching to their assault rifle, sniper rifle, submachine gun, light machine gun, etc. Is it fair to assume that I should know the difference between an assault rifle and a sniper rifle? What they look like or when I should use one over the other? I have one thing to say if you think I should…kiss my ass!

I spiral aim. Do you know what that is? It’s when a target comes into view and I try to aim for him, but all I end up doing is creating this sort of spiral circle to hone in on his head. Yes, I eventually get there, but for some reason I just can’t move my target immediately to a location without the “spiral”.

“Taking cover” behind objects doesn’t always work. I’ve seen it in multi-player and in RPG’s. A lot of times even if you hide behind a rock or a wall, people or NPC’s can shoot right through them! At least with something like a hack and slash I can block with a shield or something, but shooters just seem very finicky about cover options.

Gaining experience or unlocking weapons, maps or other objects based on multiplayer gameplay is just a bad idea for people like me. I feel like my only option is to play the campaign in these games (when it’s available) because taking the multi-player path would mean it would take me twice a lifetime to gain a fucking level.

Multi-player shooters are full of cheaters. No matter how bad I am, I do not cheat in games. I would rather come in last place and take more verbal assaults from the asshats that play and are good, than to hack my xbox or use mods to cheat. These automatic targeting or radars that let you see where people are, I’m sorry, but why am I going to pay $60 for a game, just to cheat? IMO…if you do that…you suck worse than I do!

Having said all that, I need help, maybe a 12 step program or something? I WANT to like shooters. There are so many great ones out there and I know I don’t give them a fair chance. Come on people, what can I do to fall in love with shooters like some of you are? What can I do to learn more about the mechanics of shooters? What can I do to…not suck?
